Project Background

In November 2021, the Santa Cruz City Council approved its Oversized Vehicle Ordinance(PDF, 94KB), which restricts OV parking on City streets from midnight to 5 a.m. To enforce this ordinance, the California Coastal Commission required that the City obtain a coastal permit prior to implementation to ensure equitable access to the coast.

The City’s OVO is codified within the Santa Cruz Municipal Code, Chapter 10.04 (definitions), Chapter 10.40 (Section 10.40.120), Chapter 10.41 (Section 10.41.060), and Chapter 16.19 (Section 16.19.070). The City’s Municipal code is available to review.

In May of 2023, the City was granted a one-year Coastal Development Permit(PDF, 283KB). The City has been working closely with the California Coastal Commission, the community, and key stakeholders to create a sustainable program.

Permanent signage related to the OVO will be installed at key points throughout the City in November. Review a map of the sign locations(PDF, 574KB).

The following documents have been submitted to the California Coastal Commission:

The OVO Stakeholder Group met four times in Fall 2023/Winter 2024. Past meeting agendas can be found at OVO Community Engagement.
